Berkeley Directory Coverage at a Glance
Use this table as the starting map. Some Berkeley directory sources are true name lists, such as school and license directories. Others are public-record indexes that behave like directories because they connect a name to an office, document, parcel, business filing, or older address.
| Directory | Who It Lists | Keeper | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| City contact directory | Departments, units, and selected public-facing officials | City of Berkeley | Free web page |
| Berkeley Records Online | People named in minutes, ordinances, contracts, election guides, and communications | City of Berkeley | Free municipal database |
| BUSD directory | School administrators, office contacts, counselors, and other listed school personnel | Berkeley Unified School District | Free school-by-school page |
| Berkeley City College directory | Faculty and staff by department | Berkeley City College | Free directory page |
| UC Berkeley campus records | Campus offices, departments, records contacts, and archival collections | UC Berkeley | Department pages and campus public-records office |
| Recorder grantor-grantee index | Parties named on deeds, liens, and other recorded documents | Alameda County Clerk-Recorder | Online 1969-present; older records by office or mail |
| Assessor property directory | Parcels, addresses, APNs, and limited ownership information | Alameda County Assessor | Search by parcel or address |
| Business and license directories | Licensed professionals, entities, fictitious business names, and agents | California and Alameda County offices | Official state and county search portals |
| Historic city and telephone directories | Former residents, businesses, occupations, street addresses, and phone listings | Berkeley Public Library, BHS, BAHA, SFPL, Internet Archive | Print, microfilm, and selected digitized directories |
For a current public office contact, start with the city, school, college, or campus directory. For an address-based search, use Alameda County Assessor records first, then the recorder. For a former Berkeley resident, the library's directory holdings and city clerk records usually matter more than a modern web search.
Berkeley City Contacts Are an Office Directory
The City of Berkeley contact page is best treated as an office directory, not a complete employee-by-name directory. It identifies the departments and functional units that route requests: City Clerk, Elections Official, Police Records Bureau, Office of Vital Statistics, Planning and Development, Permit Service Center, Business License, and other city services. Several entries provide direct email addresses and office phone numbers, including clerk@berkeleyca.gov, records@berkeleyca.gov, policerecords@berkeleyca.gov, vitalrecords@berkeleyca.gov, permits@berkeleyca.gov, and buslic@berkeleyca.gov.
The city also has Berkeley Records Online, a municipal document database for ordinances, resolutions, meeting minutes, council communications, election results, voter guides, and contracts. That database can act like a people directory when a name appears in public city business: a board member, speaker, contractor, candidate, correspondent, petitioner, or person named in a council item.
The source capture for Berkeley's city contacts is the City of Berkeley contact directory.
This page is most useful when the search question is which Berkeley office controls a record or public contact, rather than the personal details of a private individual.
| Directory type | Office and department contact directory. |
|---|---|
| Typical fields | Department or unit name, email, phone, fax, and service function. |
| Named entries | Some department pages name public leaders, but the reliable citywide layer is the office roster. |
| Fallback | Use Berkeley NextRequest, the City Clerk, or the department contact when a public record is not already online. |
Berkeley Unified's School-by-School Directory
Berkeley Unified School District publishes one of the strongest current name directories in the city. The district directory is arranged by school and includes school addresses, fax numbers where provided, staff names, positions, and contact information. The research capture included elementary schools such as Berkeley Arts Magnet at Whittier, John Muir, Malcolm X, Oxford, Rosa Parks, Ruth Acty, Sylvia Mendez, Thousand Oaks, and Washington; middle schools including Longfellow, King, and Willard; and Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy, Berkeley Adult School, and early childhood education sites.
The directory is useful because it gives institutional context. A name may be paired with a school, role, program, main office number, or school page rather than only a bare phone number. It also has natural limits: personal home addresses are not listed, and some rows have blank contact fields.
The source capture comes from the Berkeley Unified School District directory.
Because it is organized by school, this directory is often faster when the school is known than when only a surname is known.
| Directory Field | How It Works | Use in a Berkeley Search |
|---|---|---|
| School heading | Browse section, not a required search box | Use when the campus or program is known. |
| Name | Listed in staff rows where published | Confirms a current school-linked person. |
| Position | Principal, vice principal, office assistant, counselor, program coordinator, and similar roles | Distinguishes people with similar names. |
| Contact information | Phone or other institutional contact where listed | Routes a school-related inquiry through official channels. |
| Full staff list link | Optional link on some school listings | Expands a school-level roster when available. |
Berkeley College and Campus Directory Routes
Berkeley City College maintains a faculty and staff directory organized around departments and college roles. It is a current education directory for people connected to the college and is different from city, county, or UC records. Use it when a person is tied to the Peralta college system, a BCC department, a course area, or a campus service.
The source image is from the Berkeley City College faculty and staff directory.
The BCC page fills a local gap between public school directories and the much larger UC Berkeley ecosystem.
UC Berkeley requires a fallback approach because the research pass did not capture a single official faculty/staff search URL and field list. Treat the campus as a separate public-records ecosystem: start with campus department pages, then use the UC Berkeley Public Records Office for records requests at pra@berkeley.edu or (510) 642-7464 when the material is a campus public record. UC Berkeley Police records are also separate from city police records; report requests go through UCPD at 1 Sproul Hall or ucpd-records@berkeley.edu.
Public Records That Work Like Berkeley Directories
Some official records are not called directories, but they can be searched or browsed like one. Alameda County Clerk-Recorder Web Access is the key example: the recorder index connects names to deeds, liens, reconveyances, easements, and other recorded documents. Alameda County says official public records date back to 1853 and are found alphabetically by names of parties identified on documents. The online index begins with records from 1969 to present; pre-1969 records require in-person research or a mail request.
Other public-record directories are narrower. Alameda eCourt can function as a party-name directory for public civil, family, probate, mental health, and adoption categories, subject to access rules and fees. Criminal public case information is routed through the Odyssey portal for cases with activity since 2005, but online criminal documents are not provided through that public portal. California voter records should not be treated as a public people directory; the voter-status tool is a self-check, and the full voter file is restricted by state law.
Property and Recorder Directories for Berkeley Addresses
Property is the strongest address-to-person directory layer for Berkeley. Alameda County Assessor Property Search supports three public search criteria: Parcel Number, Type Ahead Address, and Property Address. The public interface does not expose a captured owner-name search tab, so do not assume it can be searched freely by owner. For limited ownership information, the Assessor directs requesters to email assessorwebresponse@acgov.org or call (510) 272-3787 during phone hours with the property address or parcel number; written ownership information is available for a fee.
The recorder side is name-centered. Once an APN or address points toward a parcel, Clerk-Recorder Web Access can identify recorded party names for 1969-present documents, and older records can be searched through the office or mail process. The Treasurer-Tax Collector property-tax lookup can support an address/APN trail, but the assessor and recorder remain the main directory sources for people connected to Berkeley real property.
| Property Directory | Search Entry Point | What It Can Establish |
|---|---|---|
| Assessor Property Search | Parcel number, type-ahead address, or property address | APN/address match and assessment-related data. |
| Ownership information request | Email, phone, or written request with APN or property address | Limited owner information when available from the Assessor. |
| Clerk-Recorder index | Recorded party names; online 1969-present | Grantor/grantee and document trails for deeds and recorded instruments. |
| Property-tax lookup | Real property secured/supplemental or unsecured lookup | Tax bill support and parcel confirmation. |
| Berkeley permits | Building Eye by address, neighborhood, or ZIP; Accela records/applications | Permit history since 1993 and public project details where available. |
A sample entry inventory for an assessor or recorder search should be kept conservative because the research capture did not open a stable parcel card or recorder result. The confirmed inventory is below.
| Parcel number / APN | Shown as the assessment identifier used to connect the address to parcel maps and property records. |
|---|---|
| Property address | The situs address of the Berkeley parcel; it may differ from a mailing address. |
| Recorded party name | Names of parties identified on recorded documents, searched alphabetically in official records. |
| Document period | Official public records date to 1853; online electronic index covers 1969-present. |
| Copy route | Plain or certified copies through the Clerk-Recorder, with older records handled by office or mail research. |
Professional and Business Directories for Berkeley
Official license and business directories are often cleaner than broad web searches because each entry is tied to a specific filing or licensing agency. California Department of Consumer Affairs License Search supports first name, last name, license number, business name, and advanced board or license-type filters. The State Bar of California searches attorneys by name or bar number. The Department of Real Estate lookup searches by licensee or company name, optional mailing-address city, or license ID. California Secretary of State bizfile searches business entities and related filings, while Alameda County fictitious business name records cover assumed names for businesses whose principal place of business is in Alameda County.
The source capture for licensing fields is the California Department of Consumer Affairs License Search.
License directories are most useful when a person is connected to a regulated profession or an official business name rather than a home address.
| Lookup | Search Fields Captured | Directory Value |
|---|---|---|
| DCA License Search | First name, last name, license number, business name, board and license type filters | License status, expiration, and discipline indicators where published. |
| State Bar Attorney Search | Attorney name or bar number; advanced search available | Attorney profile, license status, and public discipline or administrative history. |
| DRE License Lookup | Licensee/company name, optional mailing-address city, or license ID | Real-estate license status and details. |
| SOS bizfile | Business or entity search | Entity status, filings, service-of-process agent, addresses, and free PDFs where available. |
| Alameda FBN | Fictitious business name research portal, office, or mail search | Assumed business names and owner or mailing-address fields where public. |
One recent detail matters for Berkeley business directory research: Alameda County notes that AB 878 changed fictitious business name statements beginning January 1, 2024, so current filings use a business mailing address rather than the previously required registrant residence address.
Berkeley History Room Directory Collections
For former residents, the Berkeley Public Library's Berkeley History Room is the local anchor. The library points researchers to city directories, historic telephone books, business directories, Berkeley Gazette obituary research, Sanborn maps, photo archives, and genealogy databases such as Ancestry Library Edition. Its directory guide says some city and telephone directories are only in print at the Berkeley History Room, Berkeley Historical Society, or Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, while selected Oakland-Berkeley area directories are digitized and annotated for Berkeley pages.

This collection is the best Berkeley directory source when the question is where someone lived in an earlier decade.
| Collection | Years or Era Noted in Research | What It Adds |
|---|---|---|
| Bishop's Oakland directory | 1876 listed in Bay Area directory coverage | Early East Bay residents and businesses before modern Berkeley records dominate. |
| Husted Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley directories | 1884/85, 1887, 1889/90, 1892/93, and early 1900s runs | Alphabetical resident and business entries across Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley. |
| Polk-Husted directories | 1911-1915 and later Polk coverage | Private citizens, businesses, street guides, buyers' guides, and classified business listings. |
| Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda city directory | 1922 example in research | Regional directory context for people moving within the East Bay. |
| Berkeley Historical Society holdings | Printed copies and online pointers | Local historical context, city directories, and Who's Who in Berkeley, 1917. |
| Telephone directories | 20th century with gaps | Name-to-phone and address-to-occupant clues, including reverse research when available. |
Historical Berkeley Directories and the 1969 Divide
Berkeley's historical directory era overlaps with Alameda County's official record history. Alameda County was created in 1853, and the Clerk-Recorder says official public records date back to that year. Berkeley appears in Oakland/Alameda/Berkeley city directories in the 19th century, and City of Berkeley clerk records survive for 1878-1954 in the Online Archive of California. That city clerk collection includes charter records, reports, attorney opinions, city council minutes, planning material, correspondence, tax sale rolls, indices, agreements, leases, bids, ordinances, and petitions.
This timeline explains why a Berkeley person search may need both modern public-record directories and older print tools. A person who appears in a 1915 city directory may also appear in a deed book, tax sale roll, petition, obituary, or city council record, but the path is usually library, archive, or Clerk-Recorder research rather than a single web form.
Reverse Address Research With Old Directories
Historical telephone books, city directories, street guides, Sanborn maps, and tax or deed records can work together as a reverse directory. Start with the old Berkeley address, then identify the directory year, occupant name, business name, or street-guide entry. Pair that with census years through 1950, library obituary resources, city clerk records, and recorder records. The research file did not verify an official Berkeley street-renumbering project, so address conclusions should be checked against maps and parcel records rather than assumed.
This is especially useful for older neighborhoods near campus, downtown, North Berkeley, West Berkeley, South Berkeley, Elmwood, Claremont, and the hills, where a person may appear in directories, permit history, Sanborn maps, local newspapers, or city documents long before recent online portals existed.
Which Berkeley People Directory to Try First
Choose the directory by the clue you already have. A school or program clue points to BUSD or Berkeley City College. A campus clue points to UC department pages, campus public records, UCPD records, or special collections. A street address points to the Assessor, parcel viewer, recorder, property-tax lookup, and permit records. A business name points to SOS bizfile, Alameda FBN, DCA, State Bar, DRE, or the Berkeley Business License contact. A person from an earlier generation points to the Berkeley History Room, Berkeley Historical Society, BAHA, OAC city clerk records, and digitized East Bay directories.
Keep California voter records out of the general directory bucket. The state voter-status tool is for voters checking themselves, and full voter-file access is restricted to approved uses under California law. For regular directory work, use the public institutional, property, business, license, and library sources that are actually designed for lookup or research.
